The WHO has spoken out about the situation with the monkey plague.
The department described the increase in cases as an emergency situation.
The head of the World Health Organization made this statement, RIA Novosti reports.
It is noted that the day before, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared a state of emergency.
According to statistics, last year alone there was a significant surge in new cases of the dangerous disease.
In 2024, the trend continued: in the past months of this year, the figure has already exceeded last year's. At the moment, more than 14 thousand cases are known, and 524 cases have ended in death.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he had been advised to treat what was happening as a global emergency.
Ghebreyesus agreed with this wording and spoke about the WHO's plans. The agency will need $15 million to implement response measures.
Of the above-mentioned amount, WHO has only $1.45 million. The agency expects to receive the rest from sponsors.
