Biologist and virologist Petr Chumakov assessed the likelihood of an outbreak of West Nile fever in Russia.
The expert ruled out such a development of events. There will be no epidemic in the Russian Federation, because the disease is transmitted through mosquito bites, and not from person to person.
In a conversation with the Lenta.ru portal, the virologist emphasized that West Nile fever cannot be called an extremely dangerous disease.
The disease, like many other viral infections, begins quite acutely: the temperature rises, chills, dizziness, and nausea appear.
For people under 60, fever is less dangerous. The elderly suffer from the disease severely due to the development of complications, as with the flu.
The main threat comes from mosquitoes that spread the virus. The elderly should be especially wary of them, Chumakov warned.
On July 30, it became known that three cases of West Nile fever were detected in the Ryazan region. Before that, several cases were recorded in Tatarstan.
