The Council of Ulema of the Muslim Spiritual Directorate has withdrawn the fatwa allowing Muslims to have polygamy in Russia.
The head of the council, Shamil Alyautdinov, reported this on his social media page.
He explained that the decision was made in connection with the submission of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the public reaction.
Revocation of fatwa
Islamic scholars and theologians of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Russia have withdrawn the fatwa permitting religious polygamy.
The decision was made against the backdrop of the reaction of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation and the public.
The Council of Ulema of the Russian Muslim Spiritual Directorate, it seems, saw no point in entering into a discussion of this issue.
Alyautdinov recalled that last week the Spiritual Directorate of Muslims adopted a fatwa allowing Muslims in Russia to have up to four wives.
According to the Council of Ulema, polygamy is possible for Muslims if the spouse cannot have children or due to incompatibility of the spouses.
At the same time, women should be aware of the existence of other spouses.
Despite the decision taken, the DUM withdrew the fatwa after a submission from the Prosecutor General’s Office.
