The Prosecutor General's Office (PG) has appealed to the main religious organization of Muslims in Russia.
The supervisory authority did not recognize the decision of the Council of Ulema of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM) on polygamy as legal.
The Prosecutor General's Office indicated that polygamy is illegal in the Russian Federation, RIA Novosti reports.
A second marriage is not permitted if one of the partners has already legalized their relationship with another person and this union has not been dissolved.
Representatives of the prosecutor's office noted that religious associations can issue their own orders if they do not contradict the basic law of Russia.
In the case of polygamy, there are contradictions in the context of the Family Code.
Therefore, the Prosecutor General's Office submitted a submission to the DUM on the need to eliminate the violation of the law.
Thus, even belonging to a religious group does not give a citizen the right to enter into two or more marriages at the same time.
The Prosecutor General's Office expects the DUM to reconsider its decision on this issue.
Before this, the Spiritual Directorate of Muslims made a decision according to which Muslim men in the Russian Federation can have several wives, but subject to a number of conditions.
