Health Minister Mikhail Murashko told how many Russians suffer from obesity.
The head of the department touched upon this topic during a working trip to North Ossetia.
About 40 million Russians suffer from obesity, TASS reports. The minister noted that doctors should pay special attention to this issue.
Excess weight triggers processes that lead to the development of dangerous diseases, Murashko emphasized.
First of all, we are talking about type II diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension.
Therefore, the minister proposes to focus efforts on preventive measures that will protect against excess weight gain.
To determine the degree of obesity, experts rely on the body mass index (BMI). It is calculated as the ratio of weight (in kg) to height (m), squared.
For example, a person's height is 180 cm and weight is 95 kg. In this case, the calculation looks like this: 95/ (1.8*1.8) = 26.38.
The norm is within 18.5–25. Pre-obesity is from 25 to 30. If the BMI is 30–35, then we are talking about the 1st degree of obesity. The second degree is from 35 to 40, the third – from 40 and above.
