Valery Fadeev criticized the possible admission of polygamy in the Russian Federation.
According to the head of the Presidential Council for Civil Society and Human Rights, such a step leads to extremism and is a violation of the Russian constitution.
The official made this statement in a conversation with journalists, RIA Novosti reports.
Earlier, the Council of Ulema of the Russian Muslim Spiritual Directorate adopted a fatwa, according to which Muslims living in Russia would have the right to have up to four wives.
It was stipulated that the man would treat each wife and her children equally, and would also provide financial support for the entire family.
At first, the Prosecutor General's Office spoke out against this initiative, and Fadeev supported the protest.
He recalled that the prosecutor's office correctly pointed out that the fatwa violates the Russian Constitution. Consequently, its adoption leads to extremism.
Fadeyev stressed that before such decisions are made, they should be submitted for public discussion. However, as in Soviet times, in his opinion, polygamy should be a criminally punishable offense.
