Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee Yuri Shvytkin spoke about whether Russia needs to resume universal conscription into the army.
He commented on the initiative of the head of the Human Rights Council (HRC) Valery Fadeev.
In an interview with NSN, Shvytkin partially agreed with Fadeyev. But the deputy does not share the opinion that any Russian, regardless of health, must serve in the army.
The parliamentarian stressed that the health of conscripts should be approached with particular care.
Firstly, a soldier with poor health will become a burden to his comrades.
Secondly, he will most likely return to civilian life with even greater health problems.
Shvytkin pointed out that there is an alternative service in Russia, but it is not suitable for those who have obvious health problems.
The deputy added that in today’s reality, the army is not just “parade duty,” but a real readiness to defend the country.
Therefore, Shvytkin does not support the idea of recruiting “everyone in a row” into the ranks of the Russian Armed Forces.
