Putin signs law toughening penalties for concealing state registration plates

Vladimir Putin signed a new bill concerning the concealment of vehicle license plates.

Now drivers caught committing this offence may lose their license for up to one and a half years.

This follows from the text of the bill, which was posted on the portal of legal acts.

Liability is provided for the illegal use of special devices that interfere with the reading of a vehicle’s license plate or distort the information placed on them.

Drivers who resort to such tricks face confiscation of the device and deprivation of the right to drive for up to 1.5 years.

It is noted that in the event of a repeated violation, a person caught concealing state registration plates will face the same punishment.

At the same time, the bill previously stipulated that driving with illegible license plates could result in a warning or a fine of 500 rubles.

If the driver of a vehicle drove without any license plates, he could be deprived of his driver's license for no more than 3 months or be issued a fine of 5,000 rubles.

Punishment for driving with numbers recognized as fake was also regulated. For this offense, one could be deprived of a license for six months or punished with a fine of 2,500 rubles.
