Deliveries of Abkhazian tangerines have resumed after border controls were tightened.

The Minister of Agriculture of the Republic, Beslan Dzhopua, shared a comment on this topic.

According to him, last Friday a traffic jam of more than twenty cars loaded with citrus fruits formed on the Russian-Abkhaz border.

The traffic jam was caused by Russian sanitary services discovering a dangerous pest in some shipments, TASS reports.

The matter concerns flower thrips. The trucks with rejected lots were turned back, and the rest continued on their way.

Jopua stressed that the competent authorities are conducting more thorough inspections, but there should be no congestion on Saturday, the import of tangerines has resumed and is proceeding according to plan.

In November, information appeared that tangerines in Russia could become more expensive in December due to crop failure in Turkey and floods in Spain.

To avoid a shortage, the authorities have increased the import of tangerines from China. Abkhazia is also considered a traditional supplier of citrus fruits for the New Year holidays.
