The gold medal of the World Canoe Championships, which was initially not awarded to Zakhar Petrov due to an incident at the finish, was given to the Russian Federation.
The International Rowing Federation officially handed over the medal to the Secretary General of the Russian Rowing Federation Elena Iskhakova.
At the World Championships in Samarkand, Petrov finished first in the 500-meter race, but flipped over in his canoe at the finish line. The protocol indicated that he did not finish the race, RBC reports.
After the Russian side filed a protest, the medal was returned to Petrov.
However, this decision was later challenged by four other countries, and the Russian was again left without an award.
It was only in October that the ICF Board of Directors upheld the appeal of the All-Russian State Budgetary Healthcare Federation, awarding Petrov the gold medal.
According to Elena Iskhakova, Petrov’s award ceremony will now take place in a formal setting.
