The shock wave that reached Earth was caused by 'galactic cannibalism'

According to the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Journal, a massive collision of galaxies in the Stephan's Quintet group generated a shock wave that reached Earth.

When galaxies collide, they consume each other, which can probably be called galactic cannibalism.

When galaxies collide, new, larger ones are born, explained Sergei Nazarov, a research fellow at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, in an interview with RBC .

There is nothing unusual about the shock wave from a colliding galaxy.

The speed of the shock wave is not high and does not exceed 800 kilometers per second, while the solar wind can reach up to 1000 kilometers per second.

Nazarov noted that the shock wave after such a collision is not capable of reaching the Earth.

This is fundamentally impossible, he noted.

Nazarov also added that, with the help of the new device, scientists have obtained more useful information about the interaction of galaxies and the movement of waves near them.
