NASA scientists have accidentally discovered an American military base abandoned more than 50 years ago under the ice of Greenland.

A NASA research aircraft was conducting a radar scan of the ice sheet 240 kilometers from the Pituffik base.

At a depth of about 30 meters, scientists discovered a network of tunnels that was hidden from view. Initially, no one could understand what these structures were, according to the NASA Earth Observatory website.

Later, researchers discovered that under the thick ice there were the remains of “Camp Century,” which was a former secret US project.

An underground city with a chain of tunnels was built in the mid-1950s. However, in 1967, the project was abandoned, and the facility itself was buried under snow and ice.

Today, the tunnels of the secret base are hidden at a depth of 30 meters.

Researchers warn that melting ice could bring an underground site containing biological, chemical and radioactive waste back to the surface.

What is known about the "camp of the century"

Camp Century , a United States Arctic military research base in Greenland, was a pilot settlement whose ultimate goal was to create a network of launch sites for nuclear missiles.
