Giant reserves of a toxic metal have been discovered in the Arctic that could pose a threat to millions of people.
Details were revealed by scientists from the University of California (USA).
A so-called "giant mercury bomb" has been discovered in Arctic permafrost, according to the scientific journal Environmental Research Letters .
This metal has been “sealed” in ice for thousands of years, but now it is melting. At the same time, the average temperature in the Arctic is rising four times faster than in other regions of the planet.
If this mercury gets into the environment, at least 3 million people who live in the Arctic regions will suffer. Some researchers say the figure is 5 million.
Scientists predict that by 2050, much of the permafrost will disappear and mercury will spread throughout the area.
Experts are currently working to get a more accurate picture of what is happening. They will then clarify the possible consequences.
Based on this information, specialists will be able to prevent possible negative consequences.
