Chinese scientists have announced the first complete victory over type 1 diabetes.
It was possible to overcome a previously incurable and fairly common disease with the help of stem cells.
The new scientific victory is described in an article published in the journal Cell .
Scientists from China helped a woman with type 1 diabetes. She was given her own stem cells, which had been improved beforehand.
Then the body began to "relearn". It took 10 years. But eventually the body learned to produce the necessary hormone without external intervention.
After the experimental treatment, the woman stopped being bothered by sugar surges. She claims that she can now eat sweets without fear.
Two more people underwent the same treatment. Scientists are currently collecting preliminary data on how successful it was.
The final conclusions will be made in November this year. But experts are already looking at the results of the work with optimism.
The research will continue. The first patient will remain under observation by scientists for at least another 5 years.
