Experts have proven that there was an ancient ocean on Mars.
The joint study was conducted by scientists from China and Russia, who shared their results in a publication in the journal Scientific Reports .
The findings were based on information coming from the Zhurong rover, which has been on a mission to study the surface of the red planet since 2021.
The rover is located on the surface of Mars in the area of the southern part of the Utopia Planitia. It is believed that this is where an ancient ocean could have been in ancient times.
The scientists divided the region they were studying into several sections and studied the formations that were discovered there.
The nature of the relief and the age of the formations suggest that the ocean in this area existed about 3.68 billion years ago. At the same time, scientists believe that it froze 3.42 billion years ago.
Experts stress that their findings are not irrefutable proof. However, they do not contradict previously proposed assumptions about the existence of an ancient ocean on Mars.
