Russian archaeologists have discovered a huge treasure in Veliky Novgorod.
The number of artifacts found is a record.
Scientists have discovered numerous silver ornaments and coins that were laid down approximately between 975 and 1000, TASS reports.
The discovery was made during excavations on Vozdvizhenskaya Street, where a residential building is being built.
Archaeologists found 1,800 whole and fragmented coins, as well as 80+ pieces of silver jewelry.
The total weight of the treasure was 3 kg. This allows us to classify it as the largest of those ever found on the territory of Veliky Novgorod.
The treasure was named "Voznesensky" in honor of the street on which it was found.
Among the coins and jewelry, scientists found a curious artifact that could be considered a personal record.
A cross made of silver was discovered here. This is a great rarity for the last quarter of the tenth century, because at that time Christianity was just beginning to spread across the lands of Rus'.
The baptism of Rus' took place in 988, but the mass rejection of paganism occurred much later.
