NASA has suggested what a nuclear explosion in space would mean for Earth.
Just one charge detonated in near-Earth orbit is capable of destroying the entire satellite network.
NASA Director Bill Nelson issued this warning while speaking to journalists, RIA Novosti reports.
According to the head of the department, experts have analyzed what consequences a nuclear war in space could have for the planet.
The explosion of just one warhead would be enough to stop the satellite network from working. At the same time, if we are talking about six nuclear bombs, then nothing would remain of the satellites at all.
The reason is that current satellites in orbit are not designed to withstand the effects of a nuclear bomb.
So if a nuclear bomb exploded in space, it would end up destroying the satellite network.
According to Nelson, there are currently about 10 thousand artificial satellites in Earth orbit, which would be destroyed if attacked.
