Telephone scammers have begun using a new trick to deceive Russians.
Fraudsters began calling potential victims on behalf of the WhatsApp messenger administration*.
The attackers are calling Russians on behalf of security service employees, Lenta.ru reports, citing a source.
The scammers warn the user that they will block his access to the messenger if he does not give them an SMS code. This is supposedly necessary to confirm his identity.
If a person agrees to do this, he actually receives a message with a code on his phone.
Having obtained this code, the scammers gain access to the victim’s WhatsApp* account and then send messages to all contacts asking them to borrow money.
The reasons given vary, but the favorite story is about a relative who got into an accident.
