Scientists have determined the date of the largest volcanic eruption in the last 10 thousand years.

The study, based on the analysis of tree rings of semi-fossil trees in Yamal, focused on three powerful volcanic events.

The eruptions of the Ilyinsky (Kamchatka), Mazama (North America) and Kikai (Japan) volcanoes were taken as a basis, writes the Ural Federal University .

Scientists have found that the volume of volcanic mass ejected by the Kikai volcano was between 300 and 450 cubic kilometers.

At the same time, emissions from Ilyinsky and Mazama did not exceed 150 cubic kilometers.

The researchers compared this data with ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica, where high concentrations of sulfates were found.

To clarify the date, the research team also checked for anomalies in tree rings in Yamal.

Scientists have found that the eruption of the Kikai volcano occurred in 5283 BC and was the largest in the last 10 thousand years.
