The Earth was enveloped in a powerful magnetic storm of planetary scale.
This was reported by specialists from the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Recently, a powerful flare occurred on the Sun. Its consequences reached the Earth and caused a magnetic storm.
She was initially assigned a G2 level, but then she improved and received a G3 (level 3 on a 5-point scale), the institution’s website reports.
Northern lights are likely to appear in the European part of Russia. There is no data yet on how long the storm will last.
The solar flare resulted in the ejection of a cloud of plasma that rushed towards the planet.
On September 12, the Earth entered it, which caused fluctuations in the geomagnetic field. Their amplitude in the afternoon reached 100–200 nT (nanotesla).
Earlier, astronomers warned that new flares would occur on the Sun in September, which would potentially lead to new magnetic storms on Earth.
