Many couples, especially those who have lived together for a long time, often end up in divorce.
There are several typical stages that precede a breakup, which can indicate that the relationship will soon fizzle out.
Stages of a Dying Marriage
It all starts with disappointment. One of the partners realizes that the marriage is not working for him, but decides to wait to see how things will develop further.
Then comes the stage of relationship destruction, when the expectant partner realizes that disappointment will not go away.
This is followed by emotional withdrawal from the partner and the search for solutions outside of marriage. This period is characterized by infidelity and other attempts to suppress one's disappointment in marriage.
The next stage comes when people stop grasping at straws and admit that they can no longer stay in the marriage.
And finally, the fifth stage is the death of the marriage, during which the partner finally comes to terms with his feelings and comes to the decision that it is time to get a divorce.
