Retired US Navy General and former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO James Stavridis made a surprising statement about Russia.
According to the expert, the vessels of the Russian icebreaker fleet are superior to any NATO ships.
Stavridis explained: "Moscow's Arctic capabilities are truly destructive. There can be no joke about this," as reported by Bloomberg .
In addition, the former US Army general noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin has the most active Arctic program.
Assessing the situation
Stavridis also stressed that Moscow is seeking to expand its icebreaker fleet.
According to the expert, the lead patrol ship of the Russian Navy, Ivan Papanin, can be cited as an example of this statement.
The former US Army general noted that the said naval vessel was recently sent for its first tests.
As Stavridis pointed out, Russian ships are capable of “boasting” impressive offensive potential, which NATO warships lack.
