US President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Fox News commentator Pete Hegseth as his new Secretary of Defense.
Hegseth, 44, a NATO critic, is perhaps Trump's most surprising choice.
If confirmed by the Senate, Hegseth plans to rid the military of generals accused of supporting progressive policies, Reuters reports.
Trump, in announcing his decision, praised Hegseth, who is a National Guard veteran.
He explained in a statement: "Pete is smart and a true America First advocate."
In the past, Hegseth has shown limited political positions, but has criticized allies for weakness.
He also said that China was close to dominating its neighbors.
Hegseth left the military in 2021 after being suspended from service due to his political and religious views.
The Pentagon is concerned that Trump wants to get rid of disloyal military and civil servants.
