Abkhazian President Aslan Bzhania said he would resign if protesters leave the Sukhumi parliament building.
He announced his decision at a meeting with residents of the village of Tamysh.
They will leave the building, and I will write a statement, he noted. RIA Novosti reports this, citing sources.
Bzhania named the vacating of government buildings as the main condition of his resignation. After that, he is ready to announce new elections.
He stressed that he would leave his post and the vice president would govern the country.
At the same time, Bzhania himself intends to participate in the upcoming elections in Abkhazia.
Reasons for the protests
The situation in Sukhumi has become tense due to the investment agreement with Russia. The parliament intended to approve the agreement, but the opposition opposed it.
The protesters believe that the agreement with the Russian Federation will lead to the construction of apartments by Russian companies.
The opposition says this will raise housing prices, worsen the economy and harm local entrepreneurs.
They demanded that the authorities postpone the decision until the presidential elections in the spring.
The opposition believes that the issue of investments should be discussed in candidates’ election programs.
After the unrest in Sukhumi, the president is ready to step down, but only if his condition is met. The protesters are not yet ready to give in.
