The Russian diplomatic mission will not travel to Switzerland to participate in the event dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Geneva Convention.

The Swiss authorities sent a corresponding invitation to the Russian side, but were refused.

RIA Novosti reported this on Tuesday, August 20. The unofficial event is scheduled for August 25–26. Diplomats from 15 countries, including Russia, have been invited to Geneva.

The invitation was sent to the UN Security Council representatives in New York. Russia informed the initiators of the event that Russian diplomats would not come to Geneva.

Representatives from 14 other countries are planning to arrive in Switzerland.

The purpose of the event is to discuss issues related to the observance and strengthening of international humanitarian law 75 years after the adoption of the Geneva Convention.

Another goal is to demonstrate to the world community experience in blocking emerging threats to peace and security.
