The President of Mexico said whether Vladimir Putin would be arrested if he decided to visit the country.
The United States' southern neighbor signed the Rome Statute in 2000. Mexico is a party to it.
But the head of state, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, said that the country will not arrest the Russian president.
He spoke about this during a press conference, which was broadcast on the politician’s YouTube channel.
"We can't do it, it's not our business," Lopez Obrador said of the likelihood of the ICC's demand being met.
The Mexican leader thus made it clear that Putin could attend the inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum, who is preparing to become the official president of Mexico.
The politician recalled that in 2023, the country “was thrown into a scandal” because Russian military personnel took part in the parade in honor of Mexico’s Independence Day.
But Mexico City is not going to break off relations with Moscow because of this. Invitations to Sheinbaum's inauguration have been sent to all countries with which Mexico has established diplomatic relations.
