Maria Zakharova stated that the French President is not afraid of a harsh punishment.
The diplomat responded to Pope Francis' decision not to travel to Paris for the opening of the restored Notre Dame Cathedral.
In her Telegram channel, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV (1050-1106) walked barefoot in a hair shirt across the Alps and knelt for three days in front of the Pope’s residence.
The ruler begged the pontiff for forgiveness. The attempt was successful, but Henry's finale was still sad, Zakharova stated.
“Another thing is that Macron is not punished by being on his knees, but rather enjoys it,” the diplomat said.
Zakharova noted that the current head of the Catholic Church is thus showing Macron that the opening ceremony of the Olympics in Paris was “a mockery of Christianity and common sense.”
At the same time, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the official version in France sounds different.
The authorities do not want to admit that Francis condemns what was demonstrated during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games last summer.
