European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer announced the cancellation of the EC's traditional visit to Hungary.
It is also noted that Budapest holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union.
On social media, X Mamer wrote: “EC President Ursula von der Leyen said that the agency will be represented by senior officials.”
In his statements, the European Commission official referred to "recent events".
Europe's position
Prior to this statement, Mamer, speaking at a briefing, emphasized that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s trip to Moscow raises certain concerns.
As the European official pointed out, such a move by Hungary calls into question the visit of senior European Commission officials to Budapest.
Hungary, in turn, took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union until the end of the current year 2024.
Mamer described Orban's trip to Russia as follows: "The context of this visit is obvious to everyone. The fact that Orban went to the Russian Federation after taking over the presidency is especially noteworthy."
