The British artillerymen were not mentally prepared for such harsh weather conditions.

Sub-zero temperatures in Finnish Lapland have become a "culture shock" for the kingdom's military.

Soldiers from the 19th Artillery Regiment have arrived in Finland as part of military exercises, writes the UK Defence Journal .

For many servicemen, the weather conditions were a real test, said the regiment's deputy commander, Major David Mortimer.

There were days when the air temperature here dropped to minus 15 degrees.

The Brits came here to practice their Arctic combat skills. But many of them did not expect such "extreme cold" conditions.

During the exercise, the troops deployed a Swedish-made 155mm Archer self-propelled gun and learned to operate the Taipan counter-battery radar systems they had recently received.
