A seismologist has issued a warning to Muscovites.
The expert did not rule out that an earthquake could occur in the capital during the New Year holidays.
Anna Lyusina, a candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, expressed this opinion in an interview with NEWS.ru.
The expert recalled that in 1977, an earthquake occurred in Romania. However, its echoes reached Moscow, and tremors of 2.5–3 magnitude were felt on the upper floors of high-rise buildings.
Therefore, Lyusina did not rule out that Muscovites will be able to observe the same phenomenon in 2024.
She noted that recently there have been more and more high-rise buildings in Moscow, and this also affects the seismic situation in the capital.
There are many cavities under the city, and therefore the redistribution of stress can lead to earthquakes.
She emphasized that the seismic situation in Moscow must be constantly monitored, also because there are about 20 rivers flowing under the capital.
