The Dishwasher Does More Than Just Wash Dishes: How It Can Be Used for Cooking and Preserving

There are two unusual ways to use your dishwasher that are not recommended by appliance manufacturers, but many people use them.

This is pasteurization of jars and cooking food using the sous-vide method.

Is it possible to cook in a dishwasher?

Cooking food in a dishwasher seems like a strange and dangerous idea.

It is worth remembering that manufacturers of household appliances in the operating instructions advise not to use dishwashers for tasks other than washing dishes.

Most often, they do not directly prohibit cooking in the dishwasher, but this can be understood from the recommendations posted in the section on safe use.

"Cooking in the dishwasher" - what is this trend and what is its essence

Despite warnings from manufacturers, a trend has emerged on social media to cook food in the dishwasher to replace the costly sous-vide method.

In a nutshell, it involves placing vacuum-packed meat in a water or steam bath at a lower temperature than conventional frying.

The sous-vide method also requires a longer cooking time.

The meat is vacuum-packed and placed in the dishwasher.

Proponents of this method, fearing the possibility of detergent contaminating food, typically run a wash cycle with only packaged meat or vegetables, without the detergent tablet.

What is most often cooked in the dishwasher?

Dishwashers cannot handle hard root vegetables such as celery, beets, potatoes or parsley root.

The following items are placed in dishwashers for food preparation:

  • pieces of fish,
  • pork,
  • beef,
  • various types of poultry, as well as medium-hard vegetables (broccoli and cauliflower)

and cereals.

It is best to put vegetables in the dishwasher that require no more than 15 minutes of traditional cooking.

It is worth remembering that when preparing food in a dishwasher, you do so at your own risk.

Pasteurization in the dishwasher

Pasteurization of preserves is also a popular use of this device.

Pasteurization in the dishwasher may be surprising, but this option is worth considering. The main thing is to carefully seal the jars with airtight lids.

Make sure the lid fits the jar perfectly, nothing leaks, and the jar closes tightly. The best option for this is a jar with a screw-on lid.

How to Pasteurize Jars in the Dishwasher

After you place the jam, compote or homemade lecho in a scalded and dried jar, turn it upside down until it cools completely.

Place the jars with the canning jars in the dishwasher with the lids facing down. Make sure they are well positioned and will not move during the cycle.

Then set the program to create a temperature of at least 60°C.

Run the dishwasher without adding any dishwashing detergent.

After the program cycle has finished, wait until the jars have cooled down slightly. When the jars are slightly warm, you can take them out of the dishwasher and leave them until they have cooled down completely.

Earlier we talked about why you shouldn’t keep empty jars at home.
