How to Speak on the Phone When Applying for a Job

The first contact in response to an advertisement or submitted application documents is usually a telephone call.

We call our potential employer to find out details about the conditions of our future work, to arrange a meeting, or it is the employer who calls us back, interested in our offer, and invites us to an interview.

In both cases, you need to properly prepare for a short telephone conversation.

If you are looking for a job on the phone, remember that the strength and timbre of your voice, and the rate of speech are very important.

On the phone, you need to have an attitude similar to the one you present in the interview. Confidence in yourself, your competencies, strengths and values should also be visible without eye contact.

When you call a company, your goal is to arrange a meeting with the employer. Therefore, we must use such means of persuasion that the person we are talking to gets the impression that we are ideal candidates for the offered position and that it is worth getting to know us in person.

However, the conversation should be short, concise and to the point, and one should not exaggerate the number of questions that are already asked during a direct conversation.

Before you call in response to an ad, be sure to have on hand:

  • the name of the company and its industry, if indicated in the ad,
  • job title,
  • the questions we want to ask are
  • your resume,
  • pen and paper.

Before choosing a specific number, it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself not only with the content of the ad, but also with the company.

The easiest way is to use the Internet and look at the website of the company we want to be associated with.

The content of a website can not only give us a better idea of the industry, the specifics of a particular company, but also sometimes dispel our doubts about its reliability.

Employers who care about their image do not forget to include a tab on their website with opinions about the quality of the services offered or colleagues.

Every major company on the market should have its own website. If you can't find it anywhere, even in a database like Panorama, think about whether you want to work there at all.

Already at the first telephone contact we should be prepared for the following questions:

  • professional experience (position, responsibilities),
  • about education and qualifications,
  • o motivation to work.

During the interview, it is important to take notes that will include the employer's requirements.

Sometimes, from the initial conversation we can conclude that the employer still has so-called hidden requirements, so let's try to prepare relevant questions that we can ask during a direct meeting.

Never ask questions about salary, bonuses and vacations at this stage. While holding the phone, let's not do anything else. Of course, don't eat, drink or smoke cigarettes during the conversation. We don't think you can see it, but you can hear it just fine!

At the end of the conversation, we will verify the most important information, repeat the name and position of the person with whom we spoke and with whom we have an appointment.

If necessary, give the employer time to think. However, we should try to get specific answers regarding the date of the next telephone contact or meeting.
