How to Choose the Right Shoes: Four Myths You Shouldn't Believe

Should you swap high heels for ballet flats for healthy feet?

Very tight, narrow shoes deform the foot, and stiletto heels cause varicose veins and worsen the condition of the spine. Many people know this. But there are other interesting conclusions from experts.

Heels are not dangerous for healthy feet

In shoes with heels, the leg visually looks slimmer and longer. But you will have to pay for this with your health. And not only with flat feet.

The reason is that the heel puts the foot in a non-physiological position. Then the heel "hangs" and the body weight is distributed on the front part of the foot.

To compensate for the load, the foot deforms, becomes wider and does not create cushioning when walking.

This has a negative impact on the knee joints, and later on the entire spinal column.
Those who wear heels for a long time and often experience their feet gradually becoming curved and “forming a bunion”.

Platform shoes put significant stress and strain on the feet, shins and knees.

Ballet flats are the perfect footwear

Sneakers, flip-flops, ballet flats, espadrilles and flip-flops are considered normal shoes, but this is not true.

Because of the thin sole, there is no cushioning, so the foot hits the surface hard. This leads to consequences that are not immediately noticeable: joints gradually wear out, the spine is injured.

Shoes without back support, such as clogs, flip-flops, and mules, can cause dislocations. The foot constantly shifts forward and backward and from side to side when walking in them.

But the foot will also be uncomfortable in shoes with a hard sole. The sole should be moderately flexible and soft. To check when buying, you need to squeeze the sole, it should only bend slightly in the place where the toes connect with the foot. This will ensure correct movements and prevent flat feet.

If you like to wear sneakers or espadrilles, put a special insole in your shoes, it will cushion your feet when you walk.

Orthopedic shoes will fix everything

Real orthopedic shoes are designed for people with foot deformities. They are made according to individual parameters from a special elastic foam.

It reduces the load and is a trainer for the foot, activating muscles that usually do not work.

You can buy ready-made orthopedic shoes, but they will not be useful for people with healthy feet. In them, the foot gradually stops "working" and becomes less flexible.

This also applies to orthopedic insoles, arch supports and other supporting devices. They are necessary to correct foot defects. They should be used only as prescribed by an orthopedist.

Another thing is anatomical insoles. They repeat the anatomy of the foot, so they can be worn by people with healthy feet. Such a device harmoniously distributes loads across the entire foot and reduces fatigue.

Sneakers are everyday shoes

Of course, sneakers are comfortable to wear, but you need to choose them carefully. Many models are designed only for sports.

They are made of artificial materials that do not allow air to pass through well.

When worn for a long time, a warm, humid environment is created in which bacteria and fungi actively multiply. Therefore, sports sneakers need to be constantly aired and washed.

For everyday wear you need sneakers designed for that. They are expensive.

The right shoes

Experts recommend wearing shoes made of genuine leather with a heel no higher than 3 cm. In such shoes, the foot takes a natural position, and the load is evenly distributed. You can put an anatomical insole in the shoe.

For the cold season, you should choose moderately loose shoes of your size or half a size larger. Your foot should not be tight.
