When buying bedding, the question of choosing the right pillow always arises.

There are so many varieties of this item for sleeping that it is worth considering in more detail all the features of this choice.

Requirements for a sleeping pillow

When choosing a pillow, you need to understand that good sleep depends on this item. And therefore, physical and mental health. Therefore, you cannot use decorative or other types of pillows that are not intended for this purpose as a pillow for sleeping.

A sleeping pillow should be:

  • convenient to use;
  • meet hygienic requirements;
  • do not cause allergies;
  • meet individual parameters of rigidity;
  • allow air to pass through well.

There are quite a lot of materials for making pillows. But you should choose the filler based on your personal preferences. There is no universal solution to this issue.

Choosing a pillow filling

There are two types of filler: natural and synthetic. Natural fillers include: down and feathers, wool, silkworm fibers, buckwheat husks.

Feather pillows, despite their softness, have a significant drawback. With prolonged use, a large number of microorganisms and dust mites accumulate in them. It is recommended to clean such a pillow annually.

As for fillers made of synthetic materials, these include: silicone, holofiber, synthetic padding, artificial swan down, foam, etc. Such pillows are easy to use.

Some types can even be machine washed. But it is necessary to select the latest generation synthetic material.

The main condition is that the filler has good air permeability. Otherwise, after sleeping on such a pillow, you will gain nothing but fatigue.

What shape of pillow to choose

When choosing the shape of the pillow, it is necessary to understand that there are certain rules. Only if you follow them will the body position be correct and the risk of pinching nerves in the neck area will be minimal.

The pillowcase should not be too tight, otherwise it will put pressure on the neck. The pillow size should be chosen so that only the head rests on its surface. The shoulders should not be on the pillow to avoid pressure on the brachial nerve.

There are several basic pillow sizes:

  • 40 cm by 60 cm;
  • 50 cm by 70 cm;
  • 50 cm by 50 cm;
  • 70 cm by 70 cm.

As you can see, there are enough sizes to choose the right one for your build. It is necessary to take into account your sleeping position.

If you sleep mostly on your back, a soft and voluminous pillow will do. But if you sleep on your side, a thinner pillow with a little filling will do better.
