It can be quite difficult to distinguish old lard from new.

However, there are life hacks on how to do this using just one item.

Let's figure out how to determine the freshness of lard using a match.

When purchasing, it is important to examine the product carefully and also smell it.

The white-pink color of the lard indicates the freshness and quality of the product. But any shades of yellow and gray indicate that the lard is of poor quality or has already spoiled. Its skin should be soft.

Good lard smells of milk and smoke.

And to be sure of the freshness of the product, the match trick will help.

Arm yourself with a match and pierce the piece you like. The wood should easily enter the fat.

If this happens, you can safely take the product. If the match encounters resistance and you still can’t pierce the piece of lard, it’s better to go buy the product somewhere else: this lard will probably be rancid.
