The crime remained unsolved for two decades.
But recently investigators managed to track down the criminals.
Investigative actions were carried out, during which former law enforcement officer Mikhail Smirnov gave a confession.
He said that he and his accomplice dealt with Maksimov.
He named the professional activity of the murdered man as the motive for the crime.
Maksimov exposed illegal actions by law enforcement officers. In the summer of 2004, he disappeared without a trace.
Smirnov not only confessed to the crime, but also told where he buried the body.
The remains of the murdered man were discovered several days after the start of excavations in a forest belt near the village of Beloostrov.
Examinations will be carried out to confirm the identity of the deceased and establish the cause of death.
