Reuters: Finland Detains Suspicious 'Russian' Tanker

Police reported the detention of a tanker after an incident in the Gulf of Finland.

The attention of law enforcement officers was drawn to the tanker Eagle S, which allegedly belongs to the shadow fleet of Russia.

As Reuters has learned, Finnish law enforcement officers detained the vessel shortly after several underwater cables were damaged.

This telecommunications infrastructure connects Finland and Estonia.

Finnish customs officers took part in the arrest.

They were the ones who called the tanker part of Russia’s shadow fleet.

The Eagle S itself was sailing under the Cook Islands flag.

The tanker's crew is suspected of damaging underwater cables.

As part of the investigation, the vessel was towed to Finnish territorial waters for further investigation, the agency reports.

Recently, Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that his country and the West are allegedly threatened by the Russian shadow fleet.

The politician called for a fight against the risks that come from this “shadow fleet”.
