The Main Directorate of the Russian Emergencies Ministry for the Sakhalin Region, citing volcanologists, reported that the Alaid volcano in the Kuril Islands had suddenly become active.

In particular, we are talking about the volcano located on Atlasov Island.

The ash column reportedly rose to a height of 3.5 kilometers above sea level, as reported by TASS .

It is also emphasized that the volcano, which had been dormant until then, became active unexpectedly.

At present, the ash and smoke plume covers an area of 31 kilometers.

Unusual activity

Alaid Volcano is the highest volcano in the Kuril Islands and is located in the northern part of the region.

Alaid was at its peak in the late 18th century, erupting approximately ten times during that period.

Experts also reported that the volcano was active between 2015 and 2016, but erupted quite weakly.
