New details of the high-profile case of Nikita Zhuravel have become known.
The man who burned the Koran in Volgograd last year has been charged with treason.
The Russian Prosecutor General's Office reported this on its Telegram channel.
It is noted that the department approved the guilty verdict under the article “High Treason”, for which the defendant in the case could face up to life imprisonment.
Circumstances of the case
According to investigators, Zhuravel acted on his own initiative when he contacted the SBU in March 2023.
The Ukrainian security service received information from him about the transportation of Russian military equipment, as well as about the movements of one of the military unit’s official vehicles.
A 19-year-old man was detained after he burned a Koran in front of a mosque in Volgograd on orders from the SBU.
After his arrest, Zhuravel was transferred to Chechnya, where he fell into the hands of Chechen investigators. It is noted that the son of the head of the republic, Adam Kadyrov, was filmed beating the accused in September 2023.
