An environmental disaster has been reported in India.

Toxic foam has appeared on the surface of the Yamuna River, a tributary of the sacred Ganges River.

The Indian portal Hindustan Times reported on the incident. The publication shared footage of journalists moving in a layer of white foam that reached shoulder height.

It is noted that the composition of the surface layer of the river is hazardous to health. It consists of ammonia and phosphates, which have a detrimental effect on the respiratory system and human skin.

The Yamuna is known as a river into which 3.6 billion litres of wastewater are dumped every year. However, this is not the only factor that has become a decisive factor in water pollution.

The nearby metropolis of New Delhi has poor air quality.

In India, there has been concern about the situation as the festival season approaches, including the autumn festival of Chhath Puja, which involves taking a dip in the river.
