The investigator in the case of Major General Ivan Popov refused to interrogate the accused's former colleagues.
The details were revealed on Tuesday, September 10, by the officer’s lawyer, Sergei Buinovsky.
The former commander of the 58th Army of the Russian Armed Forces asked to interrogate a number of his former colleagues, RIA Novosti reports.
We are talking about generals and colonels whose areas were in Popov’s area of responsibility.
The officer hoped that they would become witnesses for the defense and help prove his innocence.
The defendant's representative stated that the investigator did not want to interrogate the presented list of people who are personally acquainted with Popov.
The lawyer added that the general was not allowed to study the entire materials of the criminal case. They have already been transferred to the military prosecutor's office.
The officer is currently under house arrest until October 11. Before that, he was held in a pretrial detention center, but his lawyers managed to get his pretrial detention mitigated.
The damage in Popov's case is estimated at 100 million rubles. He is accused of stealing over 1.7 thousand tons of metal.
