A rare oarfish, known as the Doomsday fish or the harbinger of the Apocalypse, has been found again in California.

A three-metre-long oarfish specimen was found dead on a beach in Enquinitas last week, The Guardian reports.

The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, said it was the second such incident in three months.

The rare oarfish usually lives at depths of thousands of meters.

These marine creatures with long, ribbon-like bodies swim in the mesopelagic zone, where there is no light.

According to Japanese tradition, the oarfish is considered a predictor of natural disasters. Thus, several of these fish were discovered in Japan before the strong earthquake of 2011.

The oarfish was first spotted off the coast of California in July, when a group of kayakers saw a dead fish measuring four meters long.

This time, a dead specimen of a three-meter-long oarfish was found on a beach in Enquinitas last week.

The new incident occurred just three months after the first, which had already been dubbed an alarming sign.
