A Belgian athlete was hospitalized after swimming in the Seine River in Paris.
Media reports that triathlete Claire Michel has been hospitalized with E. coli.
She was placed under medical observation four days ago. The competition took place on July 31.
It is now reported that the cause of Michelle's deteriorating health was E. coli, writes Nieuwsblad .
The Seine could have been the source of the contamination. More than 100 years ago, the Parisian authorities banned swimming in this river.
But the current Paris administration has invested around 1.4 billion euros in the regeneration of the Seine.
The authorities of the French capital and the country's president, Emmanuel Macron, stated that the project had been successfully implemented – the river was safe again.
Claire Michel finished 38th in the swim, run and bike. Her hospitalization forced the Belgian team to withdraw from the mixed relay scheduled for August 5.
