Centuries later, Europe will face a new “black death”, but with the peculiarities of the 21st century.
A statement on this topic was made by the member of the European Commission (EC) from Italy, Paolo Inselvini.
This time, the source of the new "black plague" will not be the Yersinia pestis bacterium, but the drug fentanyl. Inselvini made this statement in his address to the EC, RIA Novosti reports.
The MP points out that the substance is cheap and is becoming "increasingly available" in Europe.
The MP emphasizes that there is an alarming trend in the growth of its use by residents of the Eurozone.
Inselvini fears the situation will spiral out of control, as has already happened in the United States, where fentanyl has flooded the streets of major cities.
But the situation in the EU can still be curbed, the parliamentarian believes. Therefore, he called on the EC to take action and save “millions of lives” from destruction.
The number of drug overdose deaths in the United States has increased in recent years, a surge linked to the expansion of illicit fentanyl production.
Drug use is harmful to health.
