The Polish authorities advocate the demolition of the “symbol of Stalin” in the capital of the republic, but are unable to do so.
The statement was made by Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.
The head of the department stressed on Polish Radio that the country's authorities cannot give the go-ahead for the demolition of the Stalinist skyscraper in Warsaw.
He called the building a "symbol of Stalin" and stressed that he did not like this mixture of styles. In his opinion, the building does not fit into the modern architecture of the city.
But, Sikorski claims, during the time when the Law and Justice party was in power, the site was added to the list of historical monuments.
This status does not allow the current leadership of the country to give the order to demolish the building, which was built during the Soviet era. Sikorsky expressed regret in this regard.
The Palace of Culture and Science, built in the 1950s, put Polish officials in an awkward position.
The construction of the facility was presented as a gift from the USSR to Poland. Today, it houses theaters, museums, shops, sports centers, and exhibitions.
