The famous "Russian spy whale" nicknamed Hvaldimir died in waters near Norway.
Hvaldimira was discovered by a father and son fishing family on Saturday while fishing near Risavika.
The beluga whale gained international attention in 2019 when it was found off the coast of Norway with the words "Equipment of St. Petersburg" written on its harness, the New York Times reported.
In 2023, Norwegian authorities advised citizens to avoid any contact with Hvaldimir, who was spotted near Oslo.
Authorities also considered the possibility of returning the beluga whale to waters close to Russia.
However, more than 70 experts from 17 countries spoke out against this initiative and signed an open letter calling for Hvaldimir's protection.
Local media also reported that the harnessed whale could have been part of a Russian reconnaissance mission.
Hvaldimir seemed comfortable around people, leading to speculation that he lived in captivity.
Experts said the cause of Hvaldimir's death would be determined after an autopsy.
