Russian jailed for working for food in Thailand

The Russian admitted to the police that he worked in a restaurant in Thailand in exchange for food and a small amount of money.

A Russian employer and an electrician were detained and arrested in Thailand.

Police on Koh Phangan are investigating a case of illegal work involving two Russians, Matichon reports.

It is reported that the 35-year-old Russian, while on the island on a tourist visa, turned to a compatriot, a restaurant owner, for help.

He offered to work as an electrician in exchange for food and money.

Police descended on the restaurant after receiving complaints from businessmen that foreigners were stealing jobs from Thais.

The restaurant owner admitted that a Russian actually came to work for him. Payment was made in cash and food every day.

The police are deciding on the punishment for the accused. The Russians could face a large fine or deportation for breaking the law.
