The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was deployed to intercept the attacks.
The target of the elite Iranian army unit was a vessel operated by a company from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The tanker was in the Persian Gulf and was sailing under the flag of the African state of Togo, Reuters reports, citing the British company Ambrey.
The vessel was carrying 1,500 tons of gas oil and was heading to the city of Sharjah (UAE). The IRGC intercepted the tanker 113 km southwest of the port of Bushehr (Iran). This happened on Sunday, July 21.
Ambrey believes that the interception was caused by the IRGC's fight against smugglers.
In January 2024, the IRGC press service announced that a ship carrying 2 million liters of contraband diesel was intercepted near the port of Bushehr.
The ship was flying the flag of an Oceanic country. Fourteen crew members were arrested for fuel smuggling.
