In Colorado, two funeral home co-owners hid bodies in their building for four years.
The couple deceived clients by promising to bury or cremate the remains of their loved ones.
Instead, in October 2023, about 190 decomposing bodies were discovered at their funeral home, NBC News reports.
Police found that some of the bodies belonged to people who died back in 2019.
In two cases, the bodies were mistakenly sent to relatives for burial.
Information about the fraud came to light after mass complaints from local residents about an unpleasant smell coming from the funeral home building.
Two co-owners hid about 190 decomposing bodies at the Penrose site, locking doors and windows and preventing people from entering.
The indictment alleged that the defendants did not cremate or bury the bodies but hid them in their building 25 miles northwest of Pueblo.
