A man accused of depriving a woman of her liberty and subjecting her to severe physical and psychological abuse for more than five years has been arrested.
Prosecutors in southwestern Poland say the abuse lasted from January 2019 until last week in the village of Gajki near Glogow.
The suspect is a 35-year-old man, a native of Poland, CBS News reports.
He held the woman, now 30, in an unheated building for five years.
The victim was repeatedly subjected to sexual and physical violence.
The man gave her limited access to food and drink, broke her arms and legs, raped, humiliated and controlled her.
He brought the captive out of isolation only with a hood over her eyes. The woman spent most of her time in a barn without a toilet or light.
The man's elderly parents told police they were unaware of the incident.
According to sources, one day the woman was taken to the hospital to give birth and give the baby up for adoption.
However, she did not dare to confess to doctors because of fear of the rapist.
The man was arrested after the woman visited the hospital again with a dislocated shoulder.
She finally decided to confess. After that, the man was detained.
Prosecutors said the suspect had been questioned but did not admit guilt.
If the court finds the man guilty, he faces up to 25 years in prison.
